Polly was the daughter of Colonel Joseph and Mary Jones Leech of New Bern. She married Richard Dobbs Spaight on September 25, 1788, in New Bern. During her husbands political career Polly became the first woman to attend a commencement at the University of North Carolina in 1795. They had four surviving children including Richard Dobbs Spaight Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Spaight Donnell. Polly survived her husband by eight years passing away in 1810.
