Mining lamps have not undergone any significant structural evolution over the centuries. What did change, however, was the raw material used as fuel for the lamps. From the 13th to the end of the 19th century, tallow, or animal fat, was used. In the early 19th century, rapeseed oil, sometimes mixed with kerosene, came into use.
