Mining 'spiders' were inserted into the walls of a mine to provide light for the miners and leave their hands free to dig. It is believed this one was used in South Australia, around Moonta, Burra and Kapunda.

Part of the Historical Relics Collection. An example of tools used in the mining industry in the nineteenth century, a time when the mining of copper in South Australia was connected strongly to Cornish migration.
