Mission Espada was founded in 1731. In the 1750’s Rancho de las Cabras, located 30 miles southeast of Mission Espada, was built to accommodate the mission’s abundant livestock. Rancho de las Cabras is also credited as the birthplace of cowboy culture (vaqueros).
