Tensors (shinshi), bamboo sticks with needles on both ends, are attached to the selvages of the fabric and then used as handles for dipping the cloth in water (mizushimi) and then the indigo vat. The soaked fabric is hung on a pole to allow the extra moisture to drip out and then the fabric is immersed in the indigo vat.
