Fin 19e-début 20e siècle

Musée des Confluences

Musée des Confluences
Lyon, France

The ancestors’ presence is embodied in objects of worship. These objects are honoured in order to ensure the progeny and material welfare of the living. Failing to perpetuate the memory of the ancestors may have adverse consequences.

Effigies of this type received the soul of a chief or noble after his burial. They were put in a place of worship and offerings just outside the village.
