The main centres for sandalwood carving were Surat, Mysore, Travancore, Coimbatore and Sindh. Small chisels were used by engravers to carve out intricate designs in wood as well as ivory. This clay model was based on the sketch of a wood carver drawn in 1887 by John Lockwood Kipling, Principal at the Sir J J School of Art.
