Zhu Nianci (1922-2004 AD), born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, was a Chinese arts and crafts master and fan panel calligrapher who specialized in calligraphy on gold-coated fan panels, and was interested in calligraphy of Thousand-character Classic on fan panels in scripts of oracle-bone inscriptions, seal, standard and running. Zhu was honored the title “Chinese Arts and Crafts Master” by the Ministry of Light Industry of China in 1988.
This fan with 40 palm bamboo ribs featuring the two Odes to the Red Cliff by Zhu Nianci on gold-coated fan panel is the only black paper fan by a Chinese arts and crafts master. Originally a gift by Zhu Nianci to Madame Mao Weidong, this fan was donated to the Fan Museum by Madame Mao in 2009 when the museum was inaugurated.
