Luzhou in China’s southwestern Sichuan province has an over-400-year-long history of oil-paper umbrella-making as it abounds in bamboo resources, which are the main material for the traditional Chinese raingear. In 2008, the oil-paper-umbrella-making technique of Luzhou was listed in the “State-level Intangible Cultural Heritage”, and regarded as the “living fossil of China’s folk umbrella-making craftsmanship”.
In a typical form of Luzhou oil-paper umbrellas, this item has a red canopy with a lithographic motif group featuring a dragon and a phoenix playing with a pearl, along with inscribed information of the producer: Fenshui Umbrella Factory, Jiangyang District, Luzhou City, Sichuan Province.
