Hangzhou, China

This umbrella has 28 ribs and a green oil-paper canopy decorated with a painted pattern featuring two phoenix flying to the sun.
In China’s southwest Guizhou province, oil-paper umbrellas have been regarded as an auspicious token for “having a baby soon” due to the homonym of “oil” and “have” as well as “paper” and “child” in the Chinese language. The round shape of the canopy in red is also seen as a symbol for completeness and abundance in life.
