Hitchcock was inspired by the "Volcano School," a significant art movement that arose due to the frequent eruptions of Kilauea during the 19th century, as well as the popularity of American landscape art. This painting depicts Moku'aweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa volcano at the elevation of 13,680 feet. The summit of Mauna Kea is visible in the background.
