 当初狩野派を学んだ森狙仙(1747~1821)は後に応挙の影響を受けて、写実的な絵画を目ざして身近な動物をよく描き、とくに猿を精細に描写したことで知られる。母猿とそれにまといつく3匹の小猿を描いた本図は、人間の母子を彷彿させ、おもわずほほえみを誘われる。
