The monument to Sir Thomas Clarkson is an obelisk made from Aberdeen granite. It was designed by George Biddell Airy, nephew of Clarkson's friend Arthur Biddell, and was erected in 1857.
Clarkson was a major campaigner calling to end the transatlantic slave trade. In 1787 he co-founded the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade and helped to persuade the politician William Wilberforce to represent the cause in Parliament.
