This image is a good example of the particular interest that Lameyer showed in Arab themes throughout his career. It was an interest he developed very successfully, with a style all his own, influenced by the fashion for the Oriental promoted by his contemporary Mariano Fortuny. Together, they traveled to Morocco in 1863, and later to Algeria, Egypt, and the Middle East. As with so many European artists of the time, the colorful exoticism and customs of those countries made a deep impression on Lameyer while he was there, and would later become the favorite themes of his oil paintings.
