Mortar bombard known as the Aubusson bombard

between 1486 and 1503

Musée de l'Armée - Hôtel des Invalides
Paris, France

This monumental bronze muzzle has a morphology typically found in medieval bombards, with significant narrowing of the powder chamber in comparison to the barrage. The barrage bears the coat of arms of Cardinal Pierre d'Aubusson, separate from the coat of arms of the Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean, of which he was the Grand Master from 1476 to 1503.
The bearings, decorated with an embossed bow, are placed far to the front on either side of the barrage, enabling this mortar bombard to be angled almost vertically.
