“Mosque” is an Arabic word, means the temple of Muslims, the house of the God, the place where people massively worship God. Ancient mosques were mainly built in Icherisheher, the oldest part of Baku. Icherisheher, surrounded by the fortress wall, is divided into several neighborhoods, which are not very large. Neighborhood mosques were usually built in the center of neighborhoods for the convenience of residents. Ancient mosques, were mainly built in Icheri Sheher, the oldest part of Baku. You can see lots of forms of mosques when you enter through the fortress wall and go along narrow streets. These mosques-religious monuments which are considered architectural pearls of “Icheri Sheher”also playing important role in Baku’s social life. There are 23 religious monuments in Icheri Sheher. 22 of them are mosques and the remaining one is church. In fact only five of these mosques function (Muhammad, Jami, Gileyli, Seyid- Murtuza Yahya, Shaikh Ibrahim).
