Mountain with sancai glaze

Tang dynasty

Wangye Museum

Wangye Museum
Shenzhen, China

The clay was sculpted into the shape of a mountain, which was textured using a bamboo stick to make the rockface look more realistic. There are holes in the body of the piece, suggesting that trees and birds were probably inserted into the mountain. The object is covered in a brilliant sancai glaze including green, yellow, and blue.
Examples of mountains with sancai glazes are very rare. Objects that emulate the rocks and mountains of nature provide evidence of the development of the art of garden construction.
