Wang Hui, also known by his courtesy name Shigu and his literary names Gengyansanren and Wumushanren, was born in Changshu, He studied the techniques of landscape painting in the Song and Yuan periods, researched intensively on various masters, and combined them into one. Though most of his works are of ancient styles, they are no less refreshing, refined, and masterfully presented. His style grew more free and unrestrained in his later years, and his works, more vast and extensive. He instructed many students, thus establishing the “Yushan School.” He was revered as the “master of a generation” by people in the Qing dynasty.
