Multicolorfin rainbowfish lives in the southern part of Korea's west coast, the Namhae Sea, Jeju Island, and the southern part of the East Sea. Its body is about 25 centimeters long, elongated at the sides, and flat. Four teeth each protrude from the upper and lower jaws. Males are blue-green on the back and yellow-green on the belly with a black spot behind the pectoral fin, while females are deeper red with less prominent black spots. Multicolorfin rainbowfish have a paternalistic social structure, with a single male having several females; if the male dies or is removed, the largest female in the group will sexually transition to a male and take over the group.
