The residential and commercial building was commissioned by company founder Lehmann Bernheimer (1841-1918) from Friedrich von Thiersch and Martin Dülfer and opened in 1890. In 1910, the extension was completed. Offering high-quality tapestries and gobelins, as well as newly produced goods, L. Bernheimer established itself as one of the most important art and furniture stores of its kind. After Lehmann Bernheimer's death, his sons took over the business; first and foremost Otto Bernheimer (1877-1960). During National Socialism, the Jewish Bernheimer family was expropriated and the company was taken over by personnel loyal to the regime, or "Aryanized" as it was then called. In 1948 it was restituted to the owners, whose descendants continued it until 1987.
