Munich: Königsplatz

Cold and food shortages plagued the people of Munich in the post-war period. On January 23, 1948, the Bavarian Trade Union Federation called a 24-hour general strike. More than 25,000 demonstrators demanded higher food rations and stronger action against the black market trade at Königsplatz. The photographer captured the event, as did the American soldier on the right, from the roof of the former administration building of the NSDAP.
