At the Santa Marta Conservatory, orphaned girls of good families learned to create intricate embroideries using colorful silk threads, mimicking the effect of painting. They copied subjects from prints or directly from famous artists like Ludovico Carracci, as seen here. Their work was highly sought after for decorating furniture or displayed as artwork, and their sales provided dowries for the girls, allowing them to aspire to good marriages.
