The scroll reads: "This part of Africa was unknown to the ancients until the Serene John king of Portugal discovered it. He had his ships sail along the western coast…that is when the tip was discovered…first called Turbulent Cape because of the great storms; then, once they had crossed the tip and discovered the Eastern Ocean, since they had found what they wished they changed its name into Cape of Good Hope.
