Naphtali Franks was born in New York City in 1715 and settled in London. He married his cousin, Phila, and became a prominent figure in the Jewish community. The Franks commissioned paintings of themselves from one of the most fashionable English portrait painters, Thomas Hudson. They show how Jews had become part of respectable middle class society, sharing the style and tastes of their Christian neighbours.
