The Narwhal – the ocean’s unicorn. Apparently, the legend of the unicorn was inspired by the spiral-shaped “tusk” of these whales. At one time, magical properties were attributed to this horn – which actually corresponds to a canine tooth. This “tusk,” which is primarily found in male animals, can reach a length of up to 2.5 meters. There has been much speculation as to its function. American scientists now believe that they have found the answer to this question. The tooth is said to be linked to ten million tiny nerve connections and to function as a hydrodynamic sensor. However, this does not explain why most females seem to be able to function quite well without this tooth.
