Nast Tureen with Lid

Because James and Dolley Madison never traveled abroad, they relied on friends and American diplomats in Europe to procure tablewares, textiles and artwork for their home, particularly items that were unavailable in the American market. In August 1806, Fulwar Skipwith, the American Consul General in Paris, purchased this tureen as part of a 231 piece porcelain service. Today, only 30 of the original pieces survive.
