The hyper-realistic glow and textures of "Still Life," as well as the impossible curvature of the glass jar that dominates the scene, are part of Héctor Borla's (1937-2002) unmistakable personal trademark. Originally from Esperanza, Argentina—whose main art museum bears his name—Borla achieved recognition both in his homeland and abroad, especially in the North American market following his recurrent success at the Art Miami fair.
This painting is part of Borla's many "metaphysical" still life paintings, in which, on folded colorful fabrics and tablecloths, he usually includes a domestic decorative element, often made of silver (vases, chalices, coffee pots), accompanied by fruits and other vegetables such as lemons, cut pumpkins, apples, and pears. Borla's objects are always painted with a slight deformation and elongation of their forms, as if they were playing between reality and fiction, between ambiguity and their practical function.
