This depiction of the West coast is a clear example of Portuguese Naturalism. João Rodrigues Vieira was one of the most expressive painters of this style. A member of the Leão Group, assembling in the Leão de Ouro Brewery, he advocated a new pictorial attitude, refusing the ideal landscapes of Romanticism.
