Released by Midway in 1993, NBA Jam became the first basketball arcade game to achieve mainstream success. The game allowed for up to four players and depicted 2-on-2 gameplay. Each playable character represented an athlete from NBA-licensed teams, including the Chicago Bulls, LA Lakers and New York Knicks. The game?s exaggerated style of play, including players engaging in gravity-defying slam-dunks, became a hallmark for many future sports game in the industry. NBA Jam?s success let to home console ports as well as several spin-offs.
