Necklace with Djed pillar amulets

Glencairn Museum

Glencairn Museum
Bryn Athyn, United States

“Djed pillar amulets were often found placed on the lower torso of mummies. This form came to be associated with the backbone of the god Osiris. A spell from the Book of the Dead says, ‘Raise yourself up, Osiris! You have your backbone once more, O Weary-hearted One; you have your vertebrae.’ Through recitation of this spell, the deceased who possessed a djed pillar amulet would be identified as being one with Osiris.” (Jennifer Wegner, label text, “Sacred Adornment: Jewelry as Belief in Ancient Egypt”)
