A small example of the Prison Archive records on display in the 2004 exhibition '466/64: A Prisoner Working in the Garden'. The Prison Archive constitutes a living record of Mandela's 27 years in prison, including handwritten letters, personal diaries and notes, official records, medical records, legal documents, rare photographs and video footage offering a novel window into the incarceration years.
By publishing and providing access to these records, we open new views on Mandela the man, on the procedures and practices of prison, the entanglements of the personal and the collective, on the workings of power and on the nature of archives themselves.
