The New Year's ceremony performed in the Una forecourt involved the king and his officers, all in formal costume, lighting incense and making obeisance in a northerly direction toward the Imperial Palace in Beijing from in front of an altar set in front of the Hokuden. The king would then take a seat in the Karahafu room on the second floor of the Seiden Main Hall, whereupon the officials would make solemn obeisance to him from the forecourt.
