Furttenbach’s travel report, which was published in 1627 as Newes Itinerarium Italiae, was a bestseller of travel literature in the seventeenth century in Germany. His “itinery” (lat. iter = path) is based on a ten-year stay in Italy. With its wealth of practical tips, its overview map, charts and clearly structured outline of the legs of the journey, the work became an indispensable vade mecum.
