The 1965 rugby league grand final between South Sydney and St George saw a record crowd attendance of 78,065 at the SCG. The actual crowd number was higher due to gatecrashers, including some who scaled a wall from the adjacent Sydney Showground, but the record stood as the largest attendance for a rugby league match in Australia for 34 years.

Between the years of 1956 and 1966 St George won the rugby league premiership 11 consecutive seasons. Here, Norm Provan is shown talking with fans after his tenth grand final win at the SCG. Provan continues to hold the record as the player with the most successful grand final appearances.
