Following the death of Mrs. Portman in 1951, a long steady decline brought about by staff shortages and accelerated by two world wars, led to the lakes in the Landscape Garden silting up and the adjoining open spaces to all but disappear under an almost impenetrable blanket of undergrowth and fallen trees.
