Formerly a gasworks, torpedo factory and submarine base, Sub Base Platypus is an emerging public domain on the foreshore of North Sydney, homeland of the Cammeraygal People. The Harbour Trust envisions Sub Base Platypus as community hub where historic spaces are revealed, reimagined and activated by a range of cultural, recreational and commercial uses.

Note underneath photograph: The North Shore Gas Works at Neutral Bay in 1902. Behind the collier discharging at the wharf are 2 Retort Houses separated by a Coal Store. Built in 1886, of cast iron columns with galvanised iron cladding, the larger Retort House remains on the site today, in a modified form, as the victualling store for HMAS Platypus.
