Only a few weeks after Pte Wood wrote to his wife and son, another letter was sent from the Western Front to Mrs Wood. This time, the letter came from Sister R Roscoe of No 10 Casualty Clearing Station:

19th July 1915

Dear Madam

I am very sorry to tell you of the sad new s of your husband's death.

His wound was a very severe one and there was very litle hope of saving his life from the first. He left no message, he was unconscious for some time before the end. All was done for him that could possibly be done but he passed peacefully away last Thursday.

All his small possessions are in the hands of the authorities and will be sent to you eventually.

With much sympathy,

Yours faithfully

R. Roscoe
Sister in Charge
