Hasegawa Settei (1813-82) and his father Settan created many illustrations of famous views. A lot of their works can be seen in printed books, but their original drawings are rare.
The Nyoi-tei was a real garden existed in the Yanagawa domain’s main residence in Shitaya, Edo (modern Taito Ward, Tokyo). In the painting, there are different seasonal flowers and leaves —cherry blossoms, azaleas, fresh green leaves and autumn leaves— in full bloom. It suggests that Settei created an imaginary Nyoi-tei garden with the most beautiful moment in each season of the year.
