Casa Guilherme de Almeida

Casa Guilherme de Almeida
Sao Paulo, Brazil

Documentary character engraving,  from the book "The Dutch Brazil under the Count João Maurício of Nassau [...]" by Caspar Barlaeus, representing Porto Calvo, the first conquest of Maurício de Nassau Count in Brazil. In the picture, big leafy trees to the left and groupings of settlers and natives are moving at the forefront in physical activities at work. Through the almost horizontal landscape in the background we see a pond on the right and a fortified building on the left. In the background, smooth profiles of mountains. In the skyon the right, floats hybrid figure with arms (or shield) and band, which reads the Latin inscription OBSIDIO ET EXPUGNATIO PORTUS CALVI (something like "Siege and capture of Porto Calvo").
