The Greek hero Odysseus, clad only in a loincloth, greets Princess Nausicaa and her maidservants. Odysseus has been shipwrecked and lost everything. Nausicaa and her attendants have just finished washing their clothes and are about to go home to eat. The princess takes pity on Odysseus and takes him back to the palace, where she feeds and clothes him.

As the survivor of a shipwreck, Odysseus has lost all his clothes, goods and money. The commissioners of the Bankruptcy Chamber (Desolate Boedelkamer) are supposed to follow Nausicaa’s example and care for the destitute and bankrupt.
