A 17-year-old work by Hanjiro Sugiyama, who was a classmate at Kawai Gyokudo and Gifu Hirotsugu High School (currently Gifu City Gifu Elementary School). The previous year, he moved to Kyoto to study painting in earnest and was introduced to Kono Bairei of the Shijo school. The trunk of the pine tree uses the mogu technique that the Shijo school was good at, and the sharp leaves are represented by lines. It is a powerful drawing. His ambition and pride as a painter can be seen in the fact that the young Tamado is boldly challenging the masterpiece of the gold folding screen.
