Oliver Johnson: Oliver W. Johnson started practicing law in 1925 and was the first black lawyer admitted to the San Antonio Bar association in 1956. Mr. Johnson did have a practice on San Antonio’s west side. Oliver W. Johnson enjoyed notoriety and influence within the black community in San Antonio. He served as the city attorney for the first ever “Negro Council.” This council acted as a city council within the existing city council for the betterment and protection of black members by having black San Antonians represented. Oliver Johnson fought for black San Antonians for almost fifty years until illness required him to retire. On December 24, 1979, Oliver W. Johnson lost his battle to illness and was buried at the Eastview cemetery, which is still in existence at the time this article was written.
