The man holding the large rice paddle is the central figure in a ceremony for the Buddhist deity Bishamonten (Vaiśravaṇa). Known as Gohan-shiki it is a peculiar ceremony held at the Enpuki-ji Temple where believers are urged to eat large bowls of rice.
