Open-Pit Mining in Minas de Riotinto

A British consortium bought the mines from the state in 1873 and began a modern, intensive mining operation to extract pyrites (copper, iron, and sulfur) in particular. Two mining systems were established: underground and open-pit, using wagons that traveled on railway tracks to transport the ore.
