Joyce Nelson and Harold Culbertson during an oral history recording at their home in NE Portland. The siblings were born on the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Reservation. The family moved to Vanport, Ore., in 1944, and escaped the 1948 Vanport flood with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Their memories of life in Vanport and the day of the flood are part of the Vanport Mosaic living archive, the largest collection of oral histories about the "Miracle City."
