Hill-Stead Museum
Farmington, United States

Originating in England, this Wedgwood Orange Bowl is crafted from stoneware and rests on a footed pedestal base with incised decoration. This bowl’s brilliant color comes from the creamware glaze applied all over, which highlights the intricately carved designs and the twisted vine handles. The bowl is made up of two halves; the top half serves as the lid and can be removed by the blossom-shaped handle.
Creamware was a decorative technique developed by Wedgwood for the royal family, earning the style the name The Queen’s Ware. Manufactured by Wedgwood, an English ceramics and luxury accessories producer founded in the mid-18th century, this orange bowl was developed as part of the line of products that made Wedgwood an international sensation in the decorative arts. Wedgwood still sells products from this line, including the orange bowl.
