As of 2017, there are three species of orangutans: the Sumatran orangutan, Bornean orangutan, and Tapanuli orangutan. All of which can only be found in the ASEAN region and are critically endangered.

These clever species are known for their dexterity. Their long arms allow these arboreal species to move through trees and build nests by weaving branches. They have also been observed to use tools out of sticks and leaves.
