Founded in May-June of 1792 by King Stanisław August Poniatowski of Poland. The order was cancelled in 1834. Restored on June 1, 1919. The awarding ceremonies were held until 1939. In 1944 the award was restored as the highest military decoration of Poland.
The cross’s beams on the reverse bear the letters S.A.R.P. – Stanisław August, King of Poland
