Osage Warrior

This watercolor depicts one of the first official Native American delegates to Washington, D.C. Painted by French artist Charles B. J. F. de Saint-Mémin, it is one of the earliest examples of a portrait of a Great Plains Native American by a non-Native artist. Although his identity is not known to us, the sitter's decorative headpiece—made with a bird skull and feathers—may manifest desired skill, such as “keen eyesight or swiftness.” It may act as a medicinal object, providing a “protective spiritual power” for the man. Also, notice his eagle engraved silver armband, likely an official gift received in D.C.
