  • Label Text: The first battle of the war was on July 29th 1894, three days before the official declaration of war. Under the command of General Ōshima Yoshimasa (1850-1926), 4000 Japanese soldiers of the First Army met 3500 Chinese soldiers of the Beiyang Army near the strategic port of Asan (Songhwan). Yōshū Chikanobu was an important woodblock print artist depicting both current events and nostalgic views of the last days of feudal Japan.
